The story

Ghana beat Libya on penalties to win a fourth AFCON title. Despite being one of Africa's most successful footballing nations historically, they have not lifted the trophy since.

Ghana's trophy history

Ghana's 'Black Stars' won four Africa Cup of Nations titles in a golden run between 1963 and 1982, but have not added a fifth in over four decades since, despite reaching three finals in that time — 1992, 2010, and 2015 — and losing all of them. Their most recent AFCON title, in 1982, came via a penalty shootout win over Libya. Ghana's most painful modern moment came at the 2010 World Cup, where they were one of the era's most exciting teams: needing only a goal in the final seconds of extra time to reach the semifinal against Uruguay, their shot was stopped by a deliberate handball from Luis Suarez on the goal line. Suarez was sent off, but Asamoah Gyan missed the resulting penalty, and Ghana went on to lose the shootout — ending Africa's best chance yet at a first World Cup semifinal, two years before Morocco eventually achieved it.
