The story

Egypt beat Ghana 1-0 to win a record-extending third consecutive AFCON title and seventh overall, a run they have not matched since.

Egypt's trophy history

Egypt are the most successful nation in Africa Cup of Nations history by a wide margin, with seven titles — nearly double the next-best countries. Their most remarkable achievement is winning three consecutive editions, in 2006, 2008, and 2010, a run of dominance no other nation has matched before or since, built around veteran midfielder Ahmed Hassan, who won all three as captain. Despite that continental dominance, Egypt's World Cup history tells a very different story: they have qualified for the tournament only three times (1934, 1990, 2018) and have never won a single World Cup match, a striking contrast for a nation with Africa's best AFCON record. Their most recent World Cup appearance, in 2018, was overshadowed by a hamstring injury to star player Mohamed Salah suffered just weeks before the tournament in the Champions League final.
